Girdlestone procedure

The Girdlestone procedure (also known as a femoral head ostectomy or Girdlestone resection arthroplasty) is an excision arthroplasty of the hip. The procedure inevitably results in limb shortening.

Indications
  • peri-prosthetic infection
  • aseptic loosening
  • recurrent dislocation
  • failed internal fixation of femoral neck fractures

History and etymology

The procedure, as developed by British surgeon Gathorne Robert Girdlestone (1881-1950) in 1928, was initially developed as a lifesaving measure to remove disease and devitalised tuberculous hips in the preantibiotic era .
