Pulmonary scedoporium infection

Pulmonary scedoporium infection is a form of extremely rare pulmonary fungal infection. Scedosporium can present as focal localized to widespread systemic disease.

Epidemiology

It typically occurs in immunucompromised patients. Both acute and chronic forms have been described.

Pathology

This occurs due to infection with several species such as

• Scedoporium prolificans
• Scedoporium angiospermum

Clinical presentation

It may give a clinical presentation similar to that of pulmonary aspergillosis.

Radiographic features

There are currently very little publications on the imaging features at the time of initial writing. If youre are an expert on this we would love your help :).

Cavitating lung lesions (mycetomas) have been reported.

Treatment and prognosis

Scedosporium infections in transplant recipients have been reported to have high rates of dissemination and a poor overall outcome.  It is usually resistant to traditional antifungal agents, and may respond to prompt management with triazoles (variconazole).
