Champagne sign (gallbladder)

The champagne sign (also known as the effervescent gallbladder sign) is a pathognomonic sonographic sign of gas in the gallbladder.

The sign refers to multiple small echogenic foci which are seen to migrate from a dependent to non-dependent position within the gallbladder as the patient changes their position which resemble effervescing bubbles of champagne in the glass. The echogenic foci represent gas formed due to wall necrosis in emphysematous cholecystitis .
