Diabetic amyotrophy
Lumbosacral radiculoplexus neuropathy is a type of acute or subacute inflammatory neuropathy involving mainly the nerve roots of the lumbosacral nerve plexus . Diabetes mellitus is a major risk factor and in diabetics, this condition is called diabetic amyotrophy.
Clinical presentation
Present as an asymmetrical debilitating pain mainly involving the proximal thigh with associated motor weakness and atrophy of muscle .
Pathology
There is acute or subacute inflammation of the nerve root and nerves causing a microvasculitis and ischemic nerve injury .
Treatment and prognosis
Current evidence suggests early treatment with immunosuppressive agents gives symptomatic relief and slows down disease progression .
