Extensor carpi radialis longus muscle

Extensor carpis radialis longus (ECRL) muscle is a muscle of the superficial layer in the posterior compartment of the forearm. It passes through the 2extensor compartment of the wrist. It is one of the three muscles forming the mobile wad of Henry. It is one of the extrinsic muscles of the hand.


  • origin: lateral supracondylar ridge of humerus, lateral epicondyle of humerus, lateral intermuscular septum of arm
  • insertion: base of second metacarpal on its posterior surface
  • arterial supply: radial recurrent artery
  • innervation: radial nerve (C6, C7)
  • action: extension and abduction of the wrist joint
