gastric band malposition

Gastric band malposition is an early complication from laparoscopic gastric band procedures which are performed for obesity. It can occur as in isolation or with other gastric band complications.

As surgical experience of lap gastric banding has accumulated, it has become a relatively rare complication.

Radiographic features

Although CT and fluoroscopy are commonly used to assess for gastric band complications, malpositioning is usually evident on plain radiographs.

Radiographic assessment primarily focuses on ascertaining the Phi angle on AP views between:

• the vertical axis of the spine
• the lie of the band tubing

A Phi angle of between 4-58º is deemed normal.

Treatment and prognosis

The gastric band can usually be repositioned laparoscopically, allowing for continued weight loss.
