Hepatoblastoma (staging)

As expected there are a number of different staging systems for hepatoblastoma.

- not specific to hepatoblastoma; used in all pediatric liver tumors

- specific for hepatoblastoma (see below)

stage I
- complete surgical resection
stage II
- IIa
  - complete macroscopic surgical resection
  - intrahepatic residual microscopic disease
- IIb
  - complete macroscopic surgical resection
  - extrahepatic residual microscopic disease
stage III
- IIIa
  - incomplete surgical resection with macroscopic residual AND / OR
  - significant tumor spill AND / OR
  - positive lymph node disease
- IIIb
  - tumor not resected
stage IV
- IVa
  - distant metastatic disease
  - primary tumor completely resected
- IVb
  - distant metastatic disease
  - primary tumor incompletely resected
