Heyde syndrome

Heyde syndrome is an association between aortic valve stenosis and gastrointestinal hemorrhage.

The etiology of the gastrointestinal bleeding in this setting is uncertain, but it is thought to be related to intestinal angiodysplasia. The strength of this association independent of age-related degeneration has been debated. Others suggest that an acquired von Willebrand syndrome (type 2A) associated with aortic valve stenosis is the etiology of the patients' bleeding .

Aortic valve replacement may decrease the risk of hemorrhage .

History and etymology

It was first described by E Heyde in 1958.
