Musculus triceps surae
Triceps surae muscle is another term used for the calf muscles, more specifically two of the three muscles of the superficial posterior compartment of the leg:
- medial and lateral heads of the gastrocnemius muscle
- soleus muscle
The group of muscles are innervated by the tibial nerve and form the Achilles tendon distally which produces the majority of ankle plantar flexion (up to 93% ). The plantaris muscle is not considered a part of this group but still contributes to the Achilles tendon.
