Prostatic infarction refers to necrosis of the prostate gland tissue from a lack of blood supply.

Histology slices on biopsy specimens may show reactive atypia .

Causes
  • prostatic artery embolization
  • presumed pelvic ischemia after
    • cross-clamping of the aorta for coronary or aortic surgery
    • hypotensive myocardial infarction
    • septic shock
Markers

PSA level may be elevated .

Radiographic features

MRI

Reported signal characteristics in the setting of post prostatic artery embolization include :

  • T1: hyperintense
  • T2: hypointense
