Sphenoidotomy

A sphenoidotomy refers to a surgical procedure when the natural ostium of sphenoid sinus is enlarged in varying degrees. They can be part of functional endoscopic sinus surgery (for sinus disease)  and also performed in the case of an endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal surgery (e.g. for surgical removal of a skull base tumor) .

Microscopic, endoscopic or ballon-assisted endoscopic procedures performed in endonasal sinus surgery and endonasal neurosurgery.

Complications

Recognized complications include

  • intraoperative complications
    • local hemorrhage
    • internal carotid injury
    • optic nerve injury
    • CSF leak
