Trochanteric syndrome
Trochanteric syndrome (greater trochanteric pain syndrome) refers to pain that originates from the lateral hip region.
Terminology
Bursitis is not necessarily present and the often-used term trochanteric bursitis is therefore not always appropriate .
Epidemiology
Trochanteric syndrome most commonly affects middle-aged females .
Pathology
Conditions that can present as trochanteric syndrome include :
- gluteus medius and/or minimus insertional tendinopathy and/or tears
- trochanteric bursitis may or may not be present
- iliotibial band syndrome
