uterine perforation
Uterine perforation represents a serious complication that can occur as a result of any type of intrauterine procedure or implantation. Some authors use the term uterine rupture synonymously with the term uterine perforation.
Pathology
Causes
- IUCD insertion: IUCD related uterine perforation
- hysteroscopic surgery
- transcervical resection of the endometrium (TCRE)
- uterine curettage and manual vacuum aspiration: manual vacuum aspiration related uterine perforation
- from devices related to intracavitary radiotherapy, brachytherapy, e.g. for treatment of cervical carcinoma
- advanced uterine or cervical malignancy
Risk factors
- cervical stenosis
- distortion or scarring of the endocervical canal, e.g. due to cone biopsy
- uterine malposition, e.g. extreme retroversion or retroflexion
- distortion of uterine anatomy, e.g. fibroids, intrauterine adhesions
- pregnancy: gravid status
- post menopausal endometrial atrophy and myometrial thinning
