Vena lumbalis ascendens

The ascending lumbar vein is a paired structure which forms a part of the venous drainage of the lumbar vertebral column.

  • location: near midline on the side of the vertebral column in the lumbar region
  • origin and termination: continuation of the lateral sacral veins; joins the subcostal vein to form the azygos and hemiazygos veins
  • tributaries and drainage: lumbar veins, draining the lumbar spinal column
  • relations: psoas major muscle anteriorly, lumbar transverse processes posteriorly
