Vieussens' arterial ring
Vieussens' arterial ring is a rare anatomic variant consisting of an anastomotic connection between the conus artery and branch vessels of the left coronary artery.
Gross anatomy
The artery arises from the conus artery, a branch of the right coronary artery, and connects to the proximal right ventricular branch. In this way it forms a connection between the left and right main coronary arteries. it is a rare variant with an estimated prevalence of approximately 3% .
History and etymology
The variant was first described by Raymond de Vieussens (1641-1715), a French anatomist .
Clinical importance
Vieussens' arterial ring may serve as a protective factor in coronary artery disease by providing a pathway for collateral circulation.
Related pathology
The variant may be associated with a fistula, aneurysm, or other coronary artery abnormality. There are reports of communication with the pulmonary arteries .
