WHO classification of anal canal tumors
The World Health Organization classifies anal canal neoplasms into intraepithelial neoplasms and invasive neoplasms which are further divided to epithelial and non-epithelial tumors and secondary lesions:
Epithelial tumors
- squamous cell carcinoma of anal canal
- adenocarcinoma of anal canal
- mucinous adenocarcinoma of anal canal
- small cell carcinoma of anal canal
- undifferentiated carcinoma of anal canal
Non-epithelial tumors
- leiomyoma of anal canal
- gastrointestinal stromal tumor of anal canal
- myofibroma of anal canal
Carcinoid tumors
- carcinoid tumor of anal canal
Melanoma
- melanoma of anal canal
Secondary tumors
- direct extension from adjacent organs: rectal, cervical, and prostate carcinomas
