Domestically acquired particulate lung disease

Domestically acquired particulate lung disease (DAPLD) or hut lung is a pneumoconiosis due to exposure from smoke from biomass fuel used in cooking in an enclosed space.

Epidemiology

Typically women who present with symptoms of a pneumoconiosis without the history of occupational exposure . The estimated prevalence is up to 20% in at-risk women . It typically occurs in developing countries .

Radiographic features

Plain radiograph and CT

Findings are non-specific :

  • upper zone predominant pulmonary nodules: diffuse fine nodules through to large irregular nodule
  • massive pulmonary fibrosis-like change in advanced cases
  • hyperinflation

Differential diagnosis

Other pneumoconioses should be considered, especially silicosis .
