Triple arthrodesis (foot)

Triple arthrodesis is a fusion procedure of three hindfoot joints: the subtalar joint, the talonavicular joint and the calcaneocuboid joint. It is often used as a definite or palliative treatment for many conditions. It reduces pain and enables patients to achieve propulsive gait but at the cost of the range of motion loss.

Indications

Indications for triple arthrodesis include:

  • painful degenerative or posttraumatic arthritis
  • end-stage flatfoot deformities
  • pes cavus deformities
  • tarsal coalition in case of secondary severe degenerative joint disease or resection failure
  • residual clubfoot deformities
  • non-acute Charcot arthropathy
  • other neurological conditions resulting in apropulsive gait (e.g. poliomyelitis, cerebral palsy)
