Ankle impingement syndromes
There are several ankle impingement syndromes. They are characterized by a limited range of motion and pain on attempting specific movements about the joint and often in a load-bearing position. They have variable etiology and pathogenesis. They are best classified according to location.
The key ankle impingement syndromes are:
- anterolateral impingement syndrome
- anterior impingement syndrome
- anteromedial impingement
- posteromedial impingement
- posterior impingement syndrome
- while there is no posterolateral impingement syndrome, there is a similar condition termed extra-articular lateral hindfoot impingement syndrome (ELHIS)
