Buccopharyngeal fascia
The buccopharyngeal fascia is the component of the middle layer of the deep cervical fascia that invests the outside of the pharyngeal constrictors and buccinator muscles.
Terminology
The term has been variably used to refer to the entire visceral component of the middle layer of the deep cervical fascia or, as used in this article, the subcomponent surrounding the pharynx and esophagus .
Gross anatomy
The buccopharyngeal fascia invests the pharyngeal constrictor muscles (superior, middle, and inferior) . Therefore, it surrounds the pharyngeal mucosal space and part of the visceral space.
Relations and/or Boundaries
- superiorly: skull base
- laterally: parapharyngeal space
- posteriorly: retropharyngeal space
- inferiorly: continuous with the covering of the pharynx and esophagus
