A case of
giant urachal cyst in a neonate: Fig. 2. A sagittal T2-W image demonstrates a unilocular serous cyst without any communication with the bladder or umbilical cord.
Tubular
intestinal duplication extending from the stomach to the ileum associated with multiple intestinal atresia and situs inversus: a case report. Preoperative imaging studies. A X-ray film revealed dextrocardia, opacity of the liver on the left side, and shifting of the nasogastric tube to the right side. B Abdominal ultrasonogram showed remarkable dilatation of the intestine
Fetus with
cystic abdominal mass on prenatal ultrasound. Transverse US of the fetus (above) shows an anechoic mass in the left side of the abdomen anteriorly. Post natal sagittal US images of the mass (below) show the mass to have mixed cystic and solid components. The diagnosis was ovarian torsion of the left ovary due to a neonatal ovarian cyst.
Meconium
pseudocyst secondary to ileum volvulus perforation without peritoneal calcification: a case report. Ultrasound image: 32.3 weeks of gestation. Longitudinal scan image thorough the fetal abdomen identifying a mass occupying the entire left hemiabdomen (meconium pseudocyst), with mixed echogenicity. No calcifications were observed.
Fetal intra-abdominal cystic lesions can arise from a number of physiological and pathological causes.
Physiological
- fetal gastric dilatation / fetal gastric bubble (can be pathological if there is a gastric outlet obstruction
- normal fetal gallbladder
Pathological
No color flow
- fetal choledochal cyst
- fetal hepatic cyst
- fetal ovarian cyst: tends to be one of the commonest of intra-abdominal/pelvic cysts
- fetal hydronephrosis
- fetal renal cysts
- fetal urinoma formation: secondary to the presence of posterior urethral valves
- enlarged fetal urinary bladder: fetal megacystis
- fetal enteric cyst(s)
- fetal enteric duplication cyst
- fetal omental cyst
- fetal mesenteric duplication cyst
- cystic appearing double bubble due to: duodenal atresia
- meconium pseudocyst
- fetal urachal cyst
- fetal splenic cyst
- fetal hydrometrocolpos
With color flow
- umbilical venous varix: particularly in intrahepatic position
- cystic neoplasms
- fetal intra-abdominal cystic teratoma: may demonstrate some color flow
