Flexor pollicis brevis muscle

The flexor pollicis brevis muscle is a muscle of the thenar eminence and is distal to the abductor pollicis brevis, and is one of the intrinsic muscles of the hand.


  • origin: tubercle of the trapezium and flexor retinaculum
  • insertion: proximal phalanx of the thumb
  • action: flexes thumb at metacarpophalangeal joint
  • arterial supply: superficial palmar arch
  • innervation: recurrent branch of median nerve
