Lateral hemivertebra

A lateral hemivertebra is a form of hemivertebra which occurs when one of the two chondrification centers fails to develop. They can be single or multiple and usually associated in the formation of scoliosis.

Subtypes

Various subtypes have been descrbied

  • incarcerated hemivertebra
    • triangular in shape
    • have a disc shape
    • endplates of adjoining vertebrae are configured to accomondate the shape of the hemivertebra 
  • non-incarcerated hemivertebra / free hemivertebra
    • trapezoidal in shape
    • endplates of adjacent vertebrae are of normal shape
    • may have a progressive scoliosis
  • multiple non-incarcerated hemivertebrae
  • non segmented vertebra: half segment is fused to adjacent disc with no intervening disc
