Mannose-binding lectin deficiency

Mannose-binding lectin deficiency is a condition that affects the immune system.

Epidemiology

It may be prevalent in 10-30% of the general population.

Associations

• disease progression in cystic fibrosis 
• severe disease in those with bronchiectasis without underlying cystic fibrosis
• more severe progression in those with spondyloarthropathies such as ankylosing spondylitis 

Pathology

Affected individuals have low levels of an immune protein named mannose-binding lectin in their blood. They are prone to recurrent infections, including infections of the upper respiratory tract and other body systems.
