paracondylar process
Paracondylar process is a rare anatomical variant of the occipital bone, where a bony exostosis extends caudally from the paracondylar region (lateral to the native occipital condyles), typically articulating with the superior surface of a transverse process of the atlas. This may be unilateral or bilateral.
The paracondylar process represents a spectrum of occipital vertebrae variations and the 3 other most common variants include:
- third condyle (condylus tertius)
- basilar process
- prebasioccipital arch
