A primary pulmonary meningioma is a very rare from of an ectopic meningioma.
Clinical presenation
They are generally asymptomatic and incidentally discovered although rarely patients with symptoms have also been reported.
Pathology
Histologically, they comprise of whorls of spindle cells interspersed with abundant psammoma bodies, and typically positive for vimentin, and EMA (epithelial membrane antigen).
Radiographic features
CT
Typically seen as a solitary pulmonary nodule. May show homogenous or heterogeneous enhancement.
History and etymology
The first case was thought to have been described by Erlandson in 1981while the first report in the English literature was thought to be by Kemnitz and Heinrich in 1982.
Treatment and prognosis
These lesions are largely benign, but malignant lesions have been rarely reported. Many publications suggest resection in appropriate cases.
