pseudocysts of the germinal matrix

Pseudocysts of the germinal matrix can be present at birth in both pre-term and full-term infants and may be due to a variety of pathologic disorders, frequently occur following hemorrhage, but they are also found incidentally in otherwise normal infants.

They are defined as pseudocysts because they are not lined by epithelium and correspond to cavitations in the germinal matrix.

Radiographic features

Ultrasound is usually the modality by which these pseudocysts are identified. Typical pseudocysts are present at the head of the caudate nucleus or slightly medially, next to the foramen of Monro .
