Reeder and Felson's Gamuts in Radiology

Reeder and Felson's Gamuts in Radiology, first published in 1975, provided comprehensive lists of radiological differential diagnoses, or gamuts, and was a bestseller for many years. The current publisher is Springer.

The first edition was edited and, primarily, written by Ben Felson and Maurice M Reeder. Additional contributors were Elias "Lee" G Theros, Herbert E Parks and George B Greenfield. It consisted of multiple lists of radiological differential diagnoses, so-called gamuts (the book is subtitled "Comprehensive Lists of Roentgen Differential Diagnosis"). The most noticeable thing about this radiology textbook is the complete absence of radiological images.

The second edition was published in 1987 and was again co-edited by Ben Felson and Maurice M Reeder.

The third edition was published in 1993 and was written in the main by Maurice M Reeder, following the death of Ben Felson in 1988. Its most notable revision was a new section on MRI gamuts by William G Bradley.

Its most recent edition, the fourth, was published in 2003. The editors of this edition were Maurice M Reeder, William G Bradley and Christopher R Merritt. It was re-issued in 2013 in both paperback and Kindle formats.

The book generated several spin off titles, each focusing in on a certain body system:

  • Reeder and Felson's gamuts in bone, joint, and spine radiology : comprehensive lists of roentgen differential diagnosis (1993)
  • Reeder and Felson's gamuts in neuroradiology : comprehensive lists of roentgen and MRI differential diagnosis (1993)
  • Reeder and Felson's gamuts in cardiovascular radiology : comprehensive lists of radiographic and angiographic differential diagnosis (1994)
