Postpneumonectomy pulmonary edema
Postpneumonectomy pulmonary edema (PPE/PPO) is a subtype of non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema. As the name suggests it occurs after a pneumonectomy. It carries a high mortality rate.
Epidemiology
Associations
Postpneumonectomy pulmonary edema is thought to be associated more with
- right sided pneumonectomy
- repeat thoracotomy
- more positive fluid balance
- high intraoperative and postoperative urine outputs
Pathology
This occurs when the remaining lung shows increased extravascular fluid in the lung and pleura, resulting in respiratory distress and impaired gas exchange.
