amsterdam criteria for HNPCC
The Amsterdam criteria are used in the diagnosis hereditary non polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC).
Amsterdam Criteria I
Initial description in 1991:
- > or equal to 3 relatives with colorectal cancer (CRC)
- > or equal to 1 case in a first degree relative
- > or equal to 2 successive generations should be affected
- > or equal to 1 tumor should be diagnosed before the age of 50 years
- FAP should be excluded
- tumors should be confirmed with histology
Amsterdam Criteria II
Revision in 1996, and is one of the most widely used criteria at time of writing (July 2016) alongwith Bethesda guidelines.
- > or equal to 3 relatives with colorectal cancer (CRC) or with an HNPCC associated cancer
- endometrial carcinoma
- small bowel adenocarcinoma
- ureter or renal pelvis cancer
- ? 1 case in a first degree relative
- > or equal to 2 successive generations should be affected
- > or equal to 1 tumor should be diagnosed before the age of 50 years
- FAP should be excluded
- tumors should be confirmed with histology
An alternative criteria scheme is the Bethesda criteria of HNPCC
