bethesda criteria of HNPCC

The Bethesda criteria are an alternative to the Amsterdam criteria for the clinical diagnosis of hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC).

Diagnosis of HNPCC is made if any of the following criteria are fulfilled:

  • Amsterdam criteria are met
  • 2 or more HNPCC related malignancies 
  • patient with colorectal cancer (CRC) has
    • first-degree relative with CRC or HNPCC related cancer; one of the cancers diagnosed <45 years of age, and the adenoma diagnosed <40 years of age
    • CRC and endometrial cancer <45 years of age
    • right-sided undifferentiated (solid or cribriform) CRC on histology diagnosed <45 years of age
    • signet ring type CRC <45 years of age
    • colonic adenomas <40 years of age
