The celiacomesenteric trunk (CMT) represents an uncommon vascular anatomical variant where both the celiac trunk and the superior mesenteric artery have a common origin from the abdominal aorta as a single trunk. Its frequency has been reported to occur in about 1.5% of the population .

Four types of CMT were described early last century by Morita et al. :

  • classical type: common trunk of all three branches of the celiac artery along with the SMA
  • common trunk of any two branches of the celiac artery along with the SMA and the third celiac artery branch arising directly from abdominal aorta (splenic, left gastric or common hepatic artery)
  • common trunk of any one branch of the celiac artery along with the SMA and the other two celiac artery branches arising directly from abdominal aorta independantly
  • common trunk of any one branch of the celiac artery along with the SMA and the other two celiac artery branches arising directly from abdominal aorta from a common trunk

    • A celiac-bimesenteric trunk, where the celiac trunk and superior and inferior mesenteric arteries all have a common origin, has been distinguished as an extremely rare variation with only a few cases reported .
