Grynfeltt-Lesshaft triangle

The superior lumbar triangle, also known as the triangle of Grynfeltt-Lesshaft, is one of the locations for a lumbar hernia. It is not to be confused with the adjacent inferior lumbar triangle (of Petit).

Gross anatomy

Boundaries

• medially: the quadratus lumborum muscle 
• superiorly: twelfth rib  
• laterally: internal oblique muscle
• floor: transversalis fascia and the aponeurosis of the transversus abdominis muscle of the abdomen
• roof: external oblique and latissimus dorsi muscles

History and etymology

J Grynfeltt and P Lesshaft independently described superior lumbar hernias in 1866 and 1870 , respectively.
