The inferior lumbar triangle, also known as the Petit triangle, is an anatomical space through which inferior lumbar hernias can occur. It is not to be confused with the adjacent superior lumbar triangle (of Grynfeltt-Lesshaft).

Boundaries
- inferiorly: iliac crest
- anteriorly: external oblique muscle
- posteriorly: latissimus dorsi muscle
- floor: internal oblique muscle

The first description of the inferior or superficial lumbar hernia by French surgeon Jean-Louis Petit (1672-1750) in 1738 .
