premature rupture of membranes

Premature rupture of membranes (PROM) refers to a rupture of the amniotic sac and chorion (membranes) occurring prior to the onset of uterine contractions. When this occurs prior to 37 weeks it is then termed a pre term premature rupture of membranes (PPROM). By this definition, PROM is classified as a rupture of membranes between 37 weeks and full term.

Epidemiology

The estimated incidence is at ~10% of pregnancies at term and ~0.7-2.0% of pregnancies before 37 weeks (for PPROM).
