prolonged rupture of membranes
Prolonged rupture of membranes refers to a rupture of membranes lasting longer than 18-24 hours (i.e. between time of rupture and time of delivery) . This situation can occur in either the term or pre-term newborns where in the latter case it is also termed prolonged preterm rupture of membranes.
Complications
- increased risk of neonatal sepsis
- pulmonary hypoplasia can develop when there is very long-standing rupture of membranes causing persistent oligohydramnios
