Upper GI study

Upper GI studies are a fluoroscopic evaluation of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum.

Indications

There are a number of indications for an upper GI study, including:

• upper abdominal pain with a possible gastric or duodenal origin
  • ulcer
  • gastritis or duodenitis
  • gastric outlet obstruction
• post gastric or duodenal procedure, e.g. post gastric sleeve

Upper GI studies are normally performed with barium, but water-soluble contrast may be used if there is a concern for perforation.
