decreased T1 signal in the basal ganglia
Hypointensity on T1 weighted images of the basal ganglia, as a general rule is in itself of limited value, and should be correlated with T2 signal, which is usually more informative. Most causes of T2 hyperintensity in the basal ganglia will result in T1 hypointensity (most are afterall due to edema of one sort or another).
