autoimmune thyroiditis
Autoimmune thyroiditis (plural: thyroiditides) (AIT) refers to a group of conditions in which there is inflammation of the thyroid gland secondary to thyroid autoantibodies.
Epidemiology
They are the most common thyroid disease group in the pediatric population .
Pathology
Entities that fall under this category include:
- Graves disease
- Hashimoto thyroiditis
- primary idiopathic hypothyroidism with thyroid atrophy (some consider same spectrum as Hashimoto thyroiditis)
- Riedel thyroiditis
- silent thyroiditis
- postpartum thyroiditis
