ball and socket ankle joint
Kugeltalus:
A novel
malformation complex of bilateral and symmetric preaxial radial ray-thumb aplasia and lower limb defects with minimal facial dysmorphic features: a case report and literature review. Anteroposterior radiograph of the lower limbs showed profound unilateral tibiofibular hypoplasia with subsequent development of ball and socket ankle joint secondary to fibular-tarsal dysplasia. Dysplasia of the tarsal and the metatarsals and hypoplasia of the terminal phalanges were evident. There was relative left tibial hypoplasia.
A ball and socket ankle joint is a variant affecting the ankle where there is a rounded or spherical configuration to the talar dome with the corresponding concavity of the tibial plafond. The distal fibula may or may not be involved.
Pathology
The etiology has been debated with two theories proposed:
- congenital
- acquired in early childhood (by age 5) secondary to osseous tarsal coalition
Associations
- absent rays
- tarsal coalition
- fibular hemimelia
