Peritoneal calcification is seen in a limited number of conditions that result in calcification of peritoneal structures. Therefore, the differential diagnosis is small:
- psammoma bodies in malignancy (most frequently cystadenocarcinoma of the ovary): fine sand-like calcification
- pseudomyxoma peritonei: often ring or arc-like calcifications, most numerous in the pelvis
- tuberculous peritonitis
- meconium peritonitis: in newborns
- undifferentiated abdominal malignancies: dystrophic calcification within the tumor masses
- peritoneal oil granulomas: result of intraperitoneal administration of liquid petroleum, an attempted remedy for peritoneal adhesion formation
- encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis, secondary to continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)
- Pneumocystis carinii infection
- hyperparathyroidism
- post-operative heterotopic ossification
