hematopoietic stem cell transplantation

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) (encompasses bone marrow transplantation (BMT)) is a relatively common procedure used to treat a wide spectrum of conditions :

• lymphoproliferative disorders, e.g. multiple myeloma (most common indication), lymphoma, 
• leukemia
• solid tumors, e.g. neuroblastoma, Ewing sarcoma, extragonadal germ cell tumors
• non-malignant disorders, e.g. bone marrow failure syndrome, severe aplastic anemia

There are a number of different types of HSCT :

• autologous HSCT: the patient is the donor and recipient of hematopoietic stem cells 
• allogeneic HSCT: the patient is the recipient of hematopoietic stem cells sourced from another individual
  • risk of developing graft versus host disease

Complications

• relapse of primary disease in ~30%
• thoracic complications of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation
• abdominal complications of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation
