Left ventricular failure

Left heart failure (LHF) or left ventricular failure (LVF) is a type of heart failure when the left ventricle is unable to pump blood effectively out of the heart. It is often used synonymously with left ventricular failure. It is one of the commonest causes of cardiogenic pulmonary edema.

Left heart failure can be further subdivide

  • left heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF with LVEF over 50%)
  • left heart failure with mid-range ejection fraction (HFmrEF with LVEF between 41-49%)
  • left heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF with LVEF less than 40%)
