Sarcomatoid neoplasms involving the chest

Sarcomatoid neoplasms involving the chest comprise of a broad group of tumors that occur in the lung, mediastinum, pleura, and chest wall. These tumors have mesenchymal component.

They include:

• primary sarcomatoid tumors of the chest
  • usually arising from the chest wall
    • Ewing sarcoma of the chest wall
    • primitive neuroectodermal tumor of chest wall
    • chondrosarcoma of chest wall
    • malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the chest wall
    • osteosarcoma of the chest wall
    • synovial sarcoma of the chest wall
    • fibrosarcoma of the chest wall
  • usually arising in the lung
    • sarcomatoid tumors of the lung
      • pleomorphic carcinoma of lung
      • spindle cell carcinoma of lung
      • giant cell carcinoma of lung
      • carcinosarcoma of lung
      • pulmonary blastoma
      • primary synovial sarcoma of the lung
  • others
    • pleural synovial sarcoma
    • pulmonary artery sarcoma 
      • primary pulmonary angiosarcoma
      • pulmonary arterial leiomyosarcoma
    • pulmonary vein leiomyosarcoma 
• metastatic sarcoma to the chest
  • metastatic sarcoma to the chest wall
  • metastatic sarcoma to the lungs
  • metastatic sarcoma to the pleura

Radiographic features

As there is considerable variation in the type of tumors, imaging features are protean and it is not meaningful to discuss specific imaging features.
