Sickle cell disease (chronic lung disease)

Chronic lung disease in sickle cell anemia is one of the pulmonary complications that can occur with sickle cell disease.

Clinical presentation

Patients often present slow progressive decline in pulmonary function in individuals affected with HbSS. Individuals usually have a preceding history of several events of acute chest syndrome of sickle cell disease.

Pathology 

Established fibrotic lung changes from repeated episodes of pulmonary infective and micro-occlusive events.

Radiographic features

HRCT

May show interstitial changes with septal thickening, wedge opacities, and traction bronchiectasis.
