Generalized osteopenia
Generalized osteopenia refers to osteopenia diffusely affecting the bones.
Differential diagnosis
The differential diagnosis is wide and includes:
- osteoporosis: decreased osteoid production
- osteomalacia: undermineralisation of osteoid
- hyperparathyroidism
- multiple myeloma
- diffuse metastases
- leukemia
- drugs e.g. steroids
- rickets
- scurvy
- anemia
- Cushing disease
- systemic mastocytosis
