Pleural calcification can be the result of a wide range of pathology and can be mimicked by a number of conditions/artifacts.
True calcification
- calcified pleural plaques from asbestos exposure: typically with sparing of the costophrenic angles
- hemothorax
- infection involving the pleura: e.g. pyothorax/empyema
- tuberculous pleuritis
- previous surgery
- extraskeletal osteosarcoma of pleura (rare)
- radiation therapy
Mimics of calcification
High density can result from magnesium mimicking calcification:
- previous talc pleurodesis
- talcosis
