Demyelinating disorders are a subgroup of white matter disorders characterized by the destruction or damage of normally myelinated structures. These disorders may be inflammatory, infective, ischemic or toxic in origin and include :

autoimmune demyelination
viral demyelination
toxic or metabolic demyelination
- osmotic demyelination
- toxic leukoencephalopathy
  - chasing the dragon
vascular (small-vessel disease) demyelination
- arteriolosclerosis:
  - small vessel cerebral ischemia
  - chronic hypertensive encephalopathy
- cerebral amyloid angiopathy
- inherited vasculopathies:
- inflammatory vasculitides:
- venous collagenosis
- others:
  - radiotherapy changes
- Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy
mechanical demyelination due to compression
- trigeminal neuralgia
